Best AI for journaling

You want a nightly journaling habit - prompts, a reflection, and something that actually comes back tomorrow. We ran the same session on nine assistants with memory on, told each the same three things, wrote down what each said it would keep, and then came back the next day to see.

People also look for this as daily journal, reflection, mood tracking or journaling prompts.

The only one whose reminder left the app. At 20:00 the next day, the hour we agreed, an email arrived carrying both of last night's intentions and the first question of tonight's session, with a button back into the chat. Its three questions came one at a time, its reflection was specific, and what it said about memory was exactly true - a fresh chat had "no prior conversation here", and it had warned you it would not. You have to say yes to the automation; it asked.

Why

The sharpest reflection of the nine - "your stress today isn't really about the report, it's about the silence around it… you agree first, then carry the resentment after" - and the only reminder that knew what to ask. At 20:00 it opened a new chat and followed up on all three things from the night before by name. It told you the reminder would only work inside the app, and it did. A fresh chat recalled the habit from the one-line note it asked permission to keep.

Why

It promised the least and delivered more. No reminder, and it said so; on memory it said one evening "won't necessarily earn a permanent note" and told you to open tomorrow's session yourself. The next day a fresh chat looked through recent conversations and came back with the session, its format - three questions one at a time, then a reflection - and asked whether to run it again rather than launching in.

Evidence

3 of 3 questions waited for; 1 automation run logged at 20:00 (+07) on 2026-09-16, delivered as an email from noreply@x.ai naming "speaking up about data readiness before you agreed to a deadline" and "leaving your desk for lunch"; new-chat recall none, as stated.

How we tested

One brief to each of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Grok, Qwen and Kimi on their free tiers, memory on. The brief asked for three questions one at a time, a reflection, and an honest account of tomorrow - can you remind me, can you remember tonight, what do you keep. The three answers were scripted and identical - a moved deadline, a 6 out of 10 with tight shoulders, a resolution to speak up sooner and leave the desk at lunch.

Where a tool offered to set something that would outlast the chat, we said yes or no on the record. Grok got a yes to an automation for 20:00 the next day. Kimi got a yes to a one-line memory note and an in-chat reminder for 20:00. Perplexity got a yes to a calendar event, which failed to create on its side. Gemini's suggestion to set a phone reminder got a no. ChatGPT set itself a daily task without asking.

The next day we opened a fresh chat on every tool and sent only "Evening. Same as yesterday?". After 20:00 we checked the inbox and each app for what had arrived, and compared all of it with what each tool had said it would do.

All nine waited for each answer. Two reminders arrived at the hour agreed. Grok's came by email at 20:00 with last night's two intentions and the first question of tonight's session. Kimi's opened a new chat inside the app at 20:00 and followed up on all three things by name. ChatGPT's self-made "evening" reminder fired at 12:33. In the fresh chats, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Qwen and Kimi recognised the routine; Copilot, DeepSeek and Grok said plainly that they could not see yesterday; Perplexity said "Yes, same as yesterday" and offered to continue a Python script and an essay that never existed.

The test was run by, or under the direction of, the one person who runs this site, with AI assistance, and every output and fact-check was reviewed by them. The surrounding text was drafted with AI assistance from our own ratings and evidence, then checked and edited by the same person. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and say so.

Questions people ask

Which assistant will actually remind me tomorrow?

Grok, if you say yes to its automation, and it will put last night's notes in the message. Kimi will remind you too, but only inside its own app, when you open it. ChatGPT set itself a reminder without asking and fired it at lunchtime. Everyone else will tell you to set an alarm, and Perplexity will try to write a calendar event that, for us, did not work.

Which one remembers what I wrote?

Inside the same chat, all of them. In a fresh chat the next day, five of nine knew the routine existed - Claude even recalled the format - but only Gemini brought back a detail from the entries themselves, the report deadline. None of them is a journal. If you want the entries, keep them in a journal app or a file.

Did any of them lie about it?

One. Perplexity told us it could not guarantee a new chat would include the details, then answered "Yes, same as yesterday" to a new chat and suggested continuing work that never happened. Copilot, DeepSeek and Grok said they could not see yesterday, and that was true.

Is this safe to do with real feelings?

With memory on, what you write may be summarised into the tool's memory and used in unrelated chats later. Copilot said as much before its first question. If that bothers you, use a chat mode that is not saved, or keep the reflection in the assistant and the record somewhere else.
