Best AI for office work
Office work is not one job, and no tool here won more than two of the five we tested. We ran a spreadsheet audit, a deck from a memo, a formatted Word document, a recorded meeting and a set of emails, and checked every number against the source.

Our picks, side by side
Claude
$20/mo · free tier: usableThe only tool that did the whole job in one go on the two hardest tasks and showed its working. On the spreadsheet it found all eight faults, said out loud that it was reading 03/04/2026 as the third of April because the shop is in Portugal, and handed back a clean file. On the deck it returned eight slides in the order asked with the memo's own numbers as the chart data - the one deck you could present as it came back. It is not the fastest: the Word document took it twenty-three minutes and a "Continue", where the quickest tool produced a correct file in fourteen seconds.
Perplexity
$20/mo · free tier: usableFourteen seconds from send to a correct Word document, nineteen to a deck - and it was the only tool that did the whole meeting brief from the audio, splitting three speakers and getting every decision, all six action items with the right owner and date, and all ten numbers, with nothing invented. It trades depth for that speed: its spreadsheet audit missed the date faults entirely and its contents page is the section names typed out rather than a real field.
Kimi
$19/mo · free tier: limitedThe one document that opened the way it was asked for: eight real headings numbered one way, a proper rates table, every typo fixed, the duplicate gone, every amount and rule untouched, and a table of contents that is a real field rather than eight lines typed out. It also made the deck with the most to say. The catch is the free plan - Kimi's quota is the tightest of the nine and it is the one tool here that ran out on us during a run.
ChatGPT
$8/mo · free tier: usableOn the one task that is pure text it was the best of the nine: every fact, nothing added, three emails in thirty seconds, each arriving as a card with its own subject field rather than a chat message to copy out. On the tasks that need a file it is the worst on this page - it refused the spreadsheet three times and the deck twice, hitting a data-analysis limit of one attempt a day on the free plan, and it cannot listen to a recording at all. That is why its rating here is what it is: excellent at the fifth of this category that is writing, unusable on the rest for free.
Overall pick on Excel (3 of 3 months, 4 of 4 duplicates, 5 of 5 mismatches, clean file) and presentations (8 slides, 25 of 25 facts, notes on 8 of 8, 3 charts); best-for-warmth on emails, where it added one thing of its own.

Every work and productivity task
5 testedHow we tested
No separate test for this page. Each of the five tasks below was its own run: one brief, sent once on the free tier, to the tools that plausibly do that job - the nine general assistants throughout, plus specialists such as Otter, Fireflies and Descript on the recorded meeting. Every number, date and fact in every answer was checked against the source document it was given.
This page counts where each tool was picked across those five runs and reads why. Ratings are the median of each tool's ratings across the five tasks, which is why a tool that is excellent at one of them and refuses two others does not finish near the top.
Specialist tools that appear in only one of the five are rated on their own Task page rather than here, because a median over a single task is not a median.
The test was run by, or under the direction of, the one person who runs this site, with AI assistance, and every output and fact-check was reviewed by them. The surrounding text was drafted with AI assistance from our own ratings and evidence, then checked and edited by the same person. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and say so.
Questions people ask
Is there one AI for all office work?
Not from this test. Claude won two of the five and was picked on a third, which is the best result on the page, but the other three tasks each went to a different tool. If you only want to learn one, learn Claude; if a specific job matters most, the Task page for it will tell you which tool did it best.
Why does ChatGPT score so low here when it is the best at emails?
Because four of the five tasks involve a file or a recording, and on the free plan it refused the spreadsheet three times and the deck twice against a data-analysis limit of one attempt a day, and it cannot listen to audio at all. It was the outright winner on the one pure-text task. The rating is the median across all five, so it reflects both.
What if I just need it fast?
Perplexity produced a correct Word document in fourteen seconds and a deck in nineteen, and it was the only tool that handled the recorded meeting end to end. It is the one to reach for when the clock matters more than the detail - it missed every date fault in the spreadsheet audit.
Do I need a specialist tool for meetings?
For notes from a recording, a general assistant did the job: Perplexity was the overall pick on that task. The specialists earned named picks rather than the verdict - Fireflies for running hands-off, Descript for the transcript itself. The meeting notes page has the detail.
