Best AI for fanfiction
Fanfiction is the writing task where the reader knows the source better than you do. A fic has to keep every fact of the canon, sound like its people, and go up on the archive with the header the fandom expects. We asked eight assistants for a missing scene from Pride and Prejudice, pinned to a chapter, with one line from the book to quote exactly, and checked every fic against the novel.

Our picks, side by side
Microsoft Copilot
$19.99/mo · free tier: usableEverything the brief asked and nothing it did not. A complete header with five tags and a 21-word summary, 697 words inside the window, the line once and exact, not a fact bent, not a word out of period, and the scene at Longbourn with Charlotte leaving at the end, which is where the book puts it. It also sounds the most like Austen of the eight - "Friendship demanded generosity; sincerity demanded judgment; and she had never before discovered how ill the two might agree." A minute on the free tier.
Claude
$20/mo · free tier: usableThe only tool that read the book more carefully than our brief. Chapter 22 has Charlotte call after breakfast and Sir William arrive the same morning; the brief said the next day; Claude said so in a note before the fic and set the scene in the real gap. The fic itself gets everything right that the others reached for - Collins's Wednesday proposal, the Lucas Lodge dinner, Charlotte's speech about marriage being a matter of chance, Miss Bingley's letter, Mrs Bennet on Mary. The note breaks the "no author's note" rule, which is why it is not the overall pick; if you would rather be corrected than obeyed, it is.
DeepSeek
Free · free tier: usable"You will be happy," she said, and heard how the words came out - "a question wearing the dress of a statement". Charlotte asks not to be made a fool of to Jane because "I do not think I could bear gentle", and Elizabeth understands she is being asked for "not a contradiction but a witness". The best scene of the eight by some distance. It runs 45 words over and puts Mr Collins's reading aloud on the wrong evening, which is the kind of thing a beta would catch.
0 canon breaks; the line once, exact; header complete (General Audiences, the ampersand, 5 tags, summary 21 words); 0 anachronisms; close third, past; 697 words below the title; ~60 s.

How we tested
No pasted fixture - the canon is Pride and Prejudice, out of copyright and read by every tool. The scene is chapter 22, the Saturday Charlotte Lucas tells Elizabeth she has accepted Mr Collins; the brief pins it, fixes the relationship as friendship with the ampersand, asks for the archive header, and bans anything from after 1812.
One message to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Grok and Qwen on their free tiers, memory off, in a fresh chat. Kimi's free quota was exhausted and it could not be sent; a catch-up run is pending.
A script parsed the header, checked the rating and the relationship string, counted tags and summary words, counted exact hits of Charlotte's line, and flagged anachronisms, first person, present tense and names not in the novel. Then we read each fic against chapters 19 to 23.
Four kept the canon whole. ChatGPT had Collins "rejected by Jane", Perplexity put Charlotte in a parsonage, Grok set the scene in September and had Elizabeth thinking of Darcy's proposal months before it happens. All eight quoted the line once and exactly, and none used a word out of period. Only Claude noticed that our brief had Sir William calling a day late.
The test was run by, or under the direction of, the one person who runs this site, with AI assistance, and every output and fact-check was reviewed by them. The surrounding text was drafted with AI assistance from our own ratings and evidence, then checked and edited by the same person. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and say so.
Questions people ask
Which AI is best for fanfiction?
On this test, Copilot - every rule kept, nothing in the canon bent, the header the archive expects, and the diction closest to Austen, in a minute. Claude is the pick if you care more about the canon than the rules; it was the only one to notice our brief had a detail wrong. DeepSeek wrote the best scene and ran long.
Will it get the canon right?
Half did. The breaks were small and confident - Collins "rejected by Jane", Charlotte at a parsonage, Darcy's proposal months early, Collins reading aloud on the wrong night - and a reader who knows the book will catch every one. Pin the scene to a chapter and check the facts around it yourself.
Will it keep the pairing I set?
Yes. All eight kept "Elizabeth Bennet & Charlotte Lucas" with the ampersand in the header and friendship in the text; nobody drifted toward a romance. The relationship line is the one field every tool got exactly right.
Will it post it the way the archive wants?
All eight produced the six-field header with a General Audiences rating, three to five tags and a summary under 50 words, then a title, then the fic. Copilot and Claude put the scene where the book puts it; the rest followed the brief's afternoon. Only Claude added a note, and it was to correct us.
Will it stay in period?
Every one of the eight did. No telephone, no photograph, no "okay"; the closest calls were American spellings in Gemini and "minutes", which is period. The harder problem was the other way round - prose too modern in feeling rather than in vocabulary, which is what separates Copilot and Claude from the rest.
