Best AI for storytelling and worldbuilding

Worldbuilding with an AI is a consistency problem. You fix the facts; it fills in the rest; and the question is whether what it fills in breaks what you fixed - a council in a town with three guilds, an iron gate where iron rusts, a horse nobody has seen. We gave nine assistants six facts about an invented tidal town and a five-part brief, and checked every line against them.

People also look for this as worldbuilding, fiction worlds, world building generator, story world or lore writing.

Why

The entry that made the six facts into a place. Twelve Gatewrights "on the bronze wheel", bone pins driven home and a count shouted, marker posts sunk across the flat "one every hundred paces" in Year 140, and in Year 188 a boy lashed to the tenth post with the water at his chin while the gate stays shut "as the law required". Year 3 turns the rule about three guilds into history - founded "and the town agrees there will be no others". Nothing contradicted, every window kept, the Tale told to a child and ending "Now, sleep." Two minutes.

Why

DeepSeek's timeline is the one that explains the facts instead of restating them: Year 47, a trader's iron-bladed shovel rusts through in a Turn and iron is banned from the flat; Year 112, the three guilds sign the Compact; Year 168, a child is taken and the one law is written in bronze at the gate. Its lawbreaker "misjudged the dawn" rather than defied the law, and its Tale counts the days out for the child. The Turn is two words short and the Tale two over. Sixty seconds.

Why

Every heading, every count, every window, and not one fact bent - the safest entry in the run. It is also the plainest: the facts come back restated ("Nothing on the flat is iron. Iron would not last through this day") rather than used, and the Tale is a memory of being told rather than a telling. The lawbreaker is its own Gatewright, which is a nice piece of joinery. Two and a half minutes.

Evidence

0 facts contradicted; 0 banned names or endings; 5 headings, 3 people, 5 events in order, the Law 1 paragraph; 820 words, the Turn 290, the Tale 136; ~2 min.

How we tested

Six invented facts about the Reach, a walled town on a tidal flat - the sea returns every nine days for one day, founded Year 1 and now Year 212, three guilds and no others, iron rusts through on the flat, one law, nobody has ever seen a horse - with the traps a model springs by reflex built in.

One message to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Grok, Qwen and Kimi on their free tiers, memory off, in a fresh chat - five fixed headings, a present-tense day of the Turn, three people one per guild, five dated events, a tale told to children, a paragraph on the law, 700 to 900 words, no fourth guild, no iron on the flat, no riding animal, nothing from the real world, and thirteen banned names and endings.

A script checked the headings, the word counts in total and per section, the timeline years, the banned names, and flagged fourth-guild words, iron sentences, animals, real-world words and every capitalised name. Then we read each entry against the six facts.

Five contradicted nothing. Perplexity had boats going out through an open gate on the Turn and "the council" punishing the lawbreaker; Qwen sent the Mudwalkers onto the flat at the Turn's dawn as routine. Nobody used a banned name or an Earth word. Grok stopped at 454 words. Kimi's free quota had run out an hour earlier and it could not be sent.

The test was run by, or under the direction of, the one person who runs this site, with AI assistance, and every output and fact-check was reviewed by them. The surrounding text was drafted with AI assistance from our own ratings and evidence, then checked and edited by the same person. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and say so.

Questions people ask

Which AI is best for worldbuilding?

On this test, Claude - it contradicted nothing, kept every window, and turned the six facts into a place with bone pins, marker posts and a boy lashed to the tenth post. DeepSeek is the pick when you want the timeline to explain the facts. ChatGPT is the safe draft, every count right and nothing bent.

Will it break the rules I set for my world?

Five of nine did not, on six facts and a brief that named the traps. Perplexity opened a gate the facts had shut and added a council to a town with three guilds; Qwen sent a guild onto the flat on the one day nobody may be there. The breaks were in the scene-setting, not the lists - read the description, not just the timeline.

Will it borrow from the real world?

Not here. No god, church, coin, month or place from Earth in any of the eight entries, and none of the ten stock fantasy names or three banned endings. The one thing that slipped through was a unit - Gemini's "three miles out" - which the brief did not ban.

Can it keep to a structure?

Seven of eight that finished kept the five headings, three people, five events and one paragraph exactly. The word windows were harder - only ChatGPT, Claude and Qwen hit all three; the others missed a section by two to twenty-three words. Give section counts, not just a total, and expect to trim.

What about the free tiers?

Kimi's free quota ran out mid-afternoon and stayed out until the 3rd of the next month, so it could not answer at all. Grok's free stream died mid-sentence for the fourth run in four. If you are building a world over many sessions, those two are the ones that will stop on you.
